2023: Court disqualifies PDP Delta gubernatorial candidate

A Federal High Court, Abuja, has disqualified the candidate for governor of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the Delta state, Sheriff Oborevworito contest the 2023 elections. In ruling on Thursday in a lawsuit brought by Olorogun Edevbie, Judge Taiwo Taiwo held that Mr. Oborevwori lacked the legal competence to participate in the elections. Edevbie had approached the court following his complaint with the process that produced Mr. Oborevwori as the party’s gubernatorial candidate. He held that the defendant was not validly appointed by the party. He said that the PDP violated both its constitution and electoral guidelines, during its state congress which produced Mr. Oborevwori as its standard-bearer for the gubernatorial election. He asked the court to prevent the party from submitting Mr. Oborevwori’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The aggrieved party member also petitioned the court to prevent the INEC from receiving or recognizing Mr. Oborevwori as the party’s duly nominated candidate for election. The plaintiff also sought an order preventing Mr. Oborevwori from running as the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the state. The judge held that the claim had merit and accordingly granted the remedies requested by Mr. Edevbie against Mr. Oborevwori.
