Abia lawmaker urges ‘political solution’ to Nnamdi Kanu case

An Abia state legislator, Obinna Ichita, has called on the federal government to pursue a political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s case. Kanu, a leader of the banned Biafran Indigenous Peoples, is being held in Abuja, where he is facing trial for terrorism. Mr. Ichita, who represents the Aba South state constituency, made the appeal in a statement in Umuahia on Thursday. According to him, resolving the persistent case of Mr. Kanu through a political approach will usher in a lasting solution and permanent peace in the southeast. He said: “As always, I am in favor of a political solution to the problems that Kanu has with the state of Nigeria. “Many eminent and well-intentioned Nigerians believe that Kanu’s continued detention is largely responsible for the current tension and security breaches in the southeast. “They have repeatedly recommended dialogue with Kanu and other separatist groups to defuse tension on the ground. “Therefore, I urge the Federal Government to consider the Kanu issue from the point of restoring peace in the area and not as the cause of insecurity in the area.” Mr. Ichita urged President Muhammadu Buhari to heed the advice and appeals of eminent Nigerians to earn their respect and trust. In particular, he recalled the special appeal of a delegation of Igbo leaders, headed by the Minister of the First Republic, Mbazulike Amaechi. “It may not be well-intentioned to ignore or disregard Amaechi’s appeal, asking the president to hand Kanu over to him. “We’ve had enough stress in the southeast. “Therefore, I encourage the Federal Government to take practical steps to restore peace in the area. “There is always a solution for every problem. Every Nigerian deserves to live in an equal and peaceful society. “Let’s give peace a chance. Lasting peace is what will heal our land,” Ichita added. He praised Kanu for preaching peace in a media interview he gave during his court appearance on Tuesday. He said the appeal went a long way in calming nerves among his supporters.
