Absence of lawyer paralyzes trial for fraud against former CEO of FIIRO

The trial for alleged certificate fraud of Chima Igwe, former Acting Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), stalled at the Ikeja High Court in Lagos on Tuesday. The court hearing on the matter could not take place due to the absence of Mr. Igwe’s lawyer. Mr. Igwe was indicted in November 2021 by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and other related offenses (ICPC) for alleged forgery of certificates. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecution informed the court that they received a letter from the defense on June 10, requesting an adjournment until June 16. The matter was scheduled to be heard on June 14, 15 and 16. ICPC also requested that June 16 be rescinded. “In light of this development, we want the court to give us three more clear dates for the continuation of this matter,” ICPC said. Abati Abidemi, a FIIRO collaborator, was summoned by the court to testify as a witness in the trial. The judge set September 12 for a new hearing on the matter.
