AFCON 2021: Senegal is African champion

Senegal on Sunday night emerged as African champion by defeating Egypt in the African Cup of Nations Final in Cameroon. Sadio Mane scored the decisive penalty kick to secure Senegal’s 4–2 win after the match ended 0–0 after some two hours of football. Victory ensures Senegal become African champions for the first time in history Having made it all the way to the last AFCON final in 2019, losing to another North African rival in Algeria, the Teranga Lions were desperate not to let the lightning strike for a second time. Seeing Mane and his teammates start on the front foot and create the opportunity early was not surprising and just four minutes into the game the Lions won a penalty kick. Mane excelled to take the shot but was saved by the Egyptian keeper Gabasky fondly refers to. Gabasky not only saved Mane’s penalty, but also made other saves to deny Senegal a chance to win in regulation time. But in the end, it was Mane who made the difference for Senegal on Sunday night; scoring the decisive penalty that installed the Teranga Lions as new winners of the African Cup of Nations. Mane, who had previously missed a penalty kick in the first half, took the final step for his team and this time buried it in the net. The Lions and Pharaohs had played 120 minutes of football without a goal before the penalty kick lottery was used to decide the winner. Kalidou Koulibaly scored the first penalty for Senegal while Ahmed Zizo scored the same for Egypt While Abdou Diallo scored the second penalty for Senegal, Mohamed Abdel-Moneim failed to score the second penalty for Egypt. Bouna Sarr squandered the Lions’ lead by wasting the third penalty for Senegal, while Marwan Hamdi scored the third penalty for Egypt. However, while Bamba Dieng scored the fourth penalty for Senegal, Mohanad Lasheen missed the fourth penalty for Egypt. It was Mane’s turn to take the decisive shot that did not disappoint to send his team into wild jubilation. Having come close in 2002 and 2019, Senegal are lucky for the third time, while Egypt remain the continent’s most successful team when it comes to AFCON with seven titles to their name. With the next African Cup of Nations tournament just around the corner next year in Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt will be hoping to come back stronger, although they are guaranteed stiff opposition from some of the big names who did poorly in Cameroon.
