Alleged blasphemy: Police arrest two for lynching of Sokoto college student

The Sokoto State Police Command said it has arrested two suspects in connection with the lynching of Deborah Samuel, a college student. Shehu Shagari College of Education who was lynched by a mob on Thursday. Ms. Samuel was said to be a 200-level student from the university’s Early Childhood Education Department. The victim was accused of blasphemy against Muhammad, a Muslim prophet, in a voice memo he posted on his class WhatsApp group. A statement from Sanusi Abubakar, a police public relations officer in the state, said other suspects caught in the viral Twitter video “will soon be caught too.” Abubakar said the students “forced the victim out of the security room where the school authorities hid her, killed her and burned down the building.” He said that the school had been closed and that men of the force were deployed to provide security in the school premises. He added that state police commissioner Kamaldeen Okunlola called on residents to keep the peace and continue their lawful activities. He said the situation is under control. The statement read in parts: “At approximately 0900 hours, a distress call was received from Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, indicating that students were rioting by a student named Deborah Samuel, a level two student, who was accused of making a social attack. Media post that blasphemed the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW). The students forcibly removed the victim from the security room where school authorities were hiding her, killed her, and burned down the building. “The students joined the scoundrels and blocked the Sokoto/Jega road. “Upon receiving the information, DC Operations directed a team of police officers and all other operational commanders in the state to the school where the path was cleared and the situation was brought under control. Two students were arrested in connection with the crime committed. “The school has been closed by the school authority and police have been deployed to provide tight security cover.” The statement added that the other suspects as exposed by the circulating video clip of the incident will be apprehended.
