Anti-corruption agency Oyo catches government officials for alleged diversion of funds

the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has handed over some officials from the Ministry of Lands to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution for allegedly embezzling government funds. OYACA President Eni Esan made this known in a statement made available to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Friday in Ibadan. Ms. Esan, a retired judge, said the agency, in compliance with its legal mandate, investigated officials (names withheld) for allegedly diverting government funds to personal accounts. She said that the agency, once the investigation was over, handed over the affected workers to the State Ministry of Justice, adding that they were currently being tried in court. The president added that the agency also recovered a certain amount of money paid to some Lagelu local government staff for the illegal sale of government land. Ms. Esan said that the money had been recovered from them and returned to the owner, Mr. Samson Olasunkanmi, who unknowingly purchased the illegal land. NAN reports that OYACA was established by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde with a mandate to investigate cases of corruption and mishandling of public funds, among others. The NAN reports that the agency lacks the power to prosecute, but can hand over any investigated case to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.
