APC drafts INEC, sets dates for presidential, gubernatorial primaries, other

Nigeria’s ruling party, the Congress of all progressives (APC), has officially notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its decision to hold primaries for the nomination of candidates for the 2023 elections. Contrary to its earlier denial, the APC, in a letter dated April 6, notified the commission of the proposed dates for its presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative elections. In the letter addressed to the INEC president, Mahmood Yakubu, and accredited to the party’s national secretary, Iyiola Omisore, the party set May 30 and 31 for the election of its presidential candidate. So far, at least six senior members of the party have declared interest in running for the job. Some of the challengers identified include APC national leader and former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; the governor of the state of Ebonyi, David Umahi; Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi; and the governor of the state of Kogi, Yahaya Bello. The party has also resolved to hold the state House and Senate elections on May 11 and 23, respectively, while the House and Senate elections are scheduled for May 16 and 18. “This serves as a formal notification, in accordance with the provisions of Section 85 of the Election Act of 2010, as amended. Kindly arrange for your officials to supervise the exercise accordingly. Hoping to receive your cooperation, please accept the assurances of my highest esteem,” Omisore said in the letter. INEC spokesman Festus Okoye confirmed the authenticity of the letter to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday. The NEC, which is the second highest decision-making body after Congress, will ratify the schedule and calendar of activities of the primaries before the INEC at the meeting. “In accordance with Article 25.2.ii of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Constitution, the National Labor Committee (NWC) invites the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party to a meeting to consider the Calendar of the Party. /Calendar of Activities for the Primaries for the nomination of candidates for the 2023 General Elections and other relevant matters of the Party,” party spokesman Félix Morka said in a statement.
