President Muhammadu Buhari has urged all 23 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential hopefuls to embrace the party and unite to secure his victory in the 2023 general election, regardless of the outcome of the ongoing party primaries. Buhari was speaking during the ongoing presidential primaries of the ruling party, APC. His speech came after the party’s 23 hopefuls made their last speech before the delegate election. Some of the candidates gave up two of the main contenders: the former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu, and the vice president Yemi Osin Bajo. Speaking, Mr. Buhari urged the party’s aspiring standard-bearer to be magnanimous in victory, especially to those who paved the way by resigning. The president also urged those who could not get their hands on the ballot to embrace the party and accept the chosen candidate in the “spirit of fair play.” The chairman stressed that party unity must be the top priority if APC is to succeed in the upcoming general election. Mr. Buhari also highlighted some of APC’s achievements in his place. Preferred applicant quality Earlier, there was speculation that the president would anoint his preferred candidate. But as he spoke Wednesday morning, he urged delegates to vote for competent candidates. He said a strong and impartial nationalist should be voted in as the party’s candidate, saying doing so would prevent the country from backsliding against the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). “We must not allow the PDP to push this country backwards,” he said.
