Buhari May Sign Reworked Election Bill On Friday

President Muhammadu Buhari may sign the long-awaited Electoral Law Amendment Bill 2021 on Friday. Authoritative sources in the presidency confirmed that the president would sign the bill around 12 pm on the day. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the National Assembly transmitted the Electoral Law Amendment Bill 2021 to the president on January 31, for the second time, after having reviewed the bill, to which he retained his approval for some stated reasons. Sources close to the president’s office revealed that arrangements had been finalized for the president to sign the amendment bill on Friday, finally putting all worries to rest. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “all these anxieties will be gone by Friday afternoon. “He will be signing the bill around noon that day. “I think he has taken his time to make the Law as impregnable as possible.” The president had withheld his assent to the bill in December 2021, citing the cost of holding direct primary elections and security challenges as part of the reasons for his decision. Another reason is the possible manipulation of electoral processes by political actors. It was the fifth time that the president would reject the approval of the Electoral Law Project since 2018. Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said Tuesday that Buhari would sign the bill “at any time from now.” He spoke just as some 25 civil society organizations protested in Abuja over the delay in passing the president’s bill.
