Buhari reiterates his promise to rescue hostages and warns against promoting terrorist propaganda

President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement on Sunday that Nigerian security forces are doing everything possible to rescue the Kaduna train attack hostages alive. The terrorists, who took the passengers off the train, released a video on Sunday showing male hostages being beaten with clubs as the hostages cried and called for the government to rescue them. The president’s press aide, Garba Shehu, in a statement it said “terrorist activity using propaganda and the use of violence to force governments to accept or submit to political demands is not new to the whole world. The president said they will not succumb to the terrorists’ demand, instead saying security forces are making efforts to rescue unharmed victims. He said: “The country’s security and defense forces are not clueless or helpless. They have their plans and ways of doing things that they will not show in the media. “The dilemmas in dealing with the specific case of the train bombers are multiple: punitive action such as popular calls to bomb known places may mitigate an angry public’s desire for revenge, but what about the hostages? They have not committed any crime. All they did was board a train. “Suffice it to say that the security forces are not giving in. They are well aware of their duties, responsibilities and what the nation expects of them. Every time they take those actions, they hope that the public will give them the necessary support. “Terrorism is a global scourge that must be combated by all actors: the army, the civilian population and communication service providers. This is the only way safe havens for terrorists everywhere in the world are eliminated. “To help the nation deal with the current situation, the media must increase its support for the fight against the exploitation of the Internet and social networks for terrorist purposes. But the president’s words do not inspire much hope. In April, Buhari ordered the country’s security forces to rescue all hostages held by non-state actors. In June, he specifically ordered the country’s security forces to rescue the train attack hostages, but a month after his instruction, the country’s security forces have been unable to do so. Some of the train passengers kidnapped in March have been released after ransom payments. No fewer than 43 of the captives, including the son of a former military governor of Kano state, Idris Garba, his wife and children are still in detention. Nine passengers died during the attack.
