Buhari signs bill raising retirement age for Nigerian teachers

President Muhammadu Buhari has passed four bills recently passed by the National Assembly, including the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022. Others are, the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022; National Biotechnology Development Agency Act, 2022 and Federal Medical Center Act, Hong (Establishment), 2022. The president’s press aide Garba Shehu said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja. According to him, the Teachers’ Retirement Age Harmonized Act sets the retirement age for teachers in Nigeria. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved in January 2021 a new bill to increase the retirement age of teachers in the country. The president transmitted the bill to the National Assembly in June of that year. “Section 1 of the Act clearly states that teachers in Nigeria will take compulsory retirement upon reaching 65 years of age or 40 years of pensionable service, whichever comes first. “While the provision of Section 3 of the Act states that the Public Service Rule or any Legislation requiring a person to retire from the Public Service at 60 years of age or after 35 years of Service shall not apply to Teachers in Nigeria”. On the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, Mr. Shehu said that it repeals the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, Cap. N118, Nigerian Federation Laws 2004 and Enact the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022. He said that this was intended to facilitate the effective implementation of the Commission’s Law Reform Proposals and improve its performance and bring the Law into line with best practices. On the National Biotechnology Development Agency Act, 2022, the presidential adviser said: “This Act provides a legal framework for the National Biotechnology Development Agency to conduct research, create and develop public awareness of biotechnology in order to encourage private sector participation in the biotechnology industry in Nigeria.” ALSO READ: Buhari Enacts Six Bills; one raises teachers’ retirement age, another establishes police academy Mr. Shehu also revealed that the president gave his consent to the Federal Medical Center, Hong (Establishment) Act, 2022. “This Act establishes the Federal Medical Center, Hong, Adamawa State to provide a legal framework for its proper management and administration. “The Medical Center will be headed by a Medical Director who will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Minister of Health, and will be the Executive Director and Accountant of the Medical Center as stipulated in Section 9 of the Act.” Mr. Shehu said that the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Speaker for National Assembly (House of Representatives) Affairs, Umar El-Yakub, was at the State House for the signing of the bills.
