Ex-NIMASA DG accuses Wike of ‘wasting N30 billion on delegates’

Former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime and Security Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, has accused Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike of “lavished N30 billion” state funds in delegates during the presidential primaries of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). Peterside said Governor Wike donated “about N10 billion of public funds in unsolicited charity to states, and about N20 billion in his ill-fated presidential bid”. The former federal lawmaker said Gov. Wike lavished billions of state funds on delegates while Rivers retirees “went to bed hungry, and some didn’t wake up in frustration.” Peterside said this on Sunday in his congratulatory message to Atiku Abubakar, who won Saturday’s PDP presidential primary with 371 votes. Peterside described Governor Wike as a “local champion” rejected by party delegates. He blamed Wike’s failure to win the primary on a lack of “required experience” in national politics and urged the governor to “remove the robe of pride” and submit to Abubakar’s tutelage. Wike, 59, came second in the primary, with 237 votes. Bukola Saraki, former Speaker of the Nigerian Senate, came in third with 70 votes, while Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel came in fourth with 38 votes. ‘Spurious allegations’ Kelvin Ebiri, Mr Wike’s spokesman, dismissed the accusations as “false and baseless”. Governor Wike defeated him in 2015 and has not recovered from that experience. His gubernatorial ambition has been thwarted twice by his director,” apparently referring to Congressional All Progressives presidential hopeful Rotimi Amaechi. Mr. Peterside and Governor Wike served as commissioner of works and chief of staff, respectively, when Mr. Amaechi was the governor of Rivers State.
