EXCLUSIVE: CAN Consults Senior Officials To Seek Support For NBA Presidential Candidate

The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)Samson Ayokunle has called out three of his top officials for anointing Joe Gadzama as the next president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). On Thursday, a statement released by Adebayo Oladeji, his media assistant, claimed that Ayokunle was seeking support for Gadzama against the other two candidates running in the upcoming NBA presidential election. The statement asserted that Mr. Gadzama was the lead attorney in CAN’s lawsuit against the Corporate Affairs Commission seeking exemption of churches from controversial sections of the Companies and Related Affairs Act, noting that it was a moment of revenge. “He (Gadzama) has requested the support of the CAN and we have accepted and adopted him as a candidate for the elections,” the statement read. “We hereby request that you adopt him as his candidate as well.” The other two candidates in the race with Gadzama are Mikyau Yakubu and Taidi Jonathan, all Christians. But the CAN president has now told PREMIUM TIMES in an exclusive interview that the statement attributed to him was issued without his approval. Ayokunle said that he had been out of the country for more than three weeks and stressed that he has not sought support for any candidate as claimed in the statement. “We don’t have a preferred candidate,” he said. “Tell me and the leadership of the CAN outside of such statements.” However, he said he has consulted senior officials involved in making such a “unilateral decision”, including Mr. Oladeje, his press assistant and the religious body’s secretary general, Joseph Daramola. “They have been asked to explain why they took unilateral measures that embarrass me, the entire CAN leadership and the body of Christ,” Ayokunle said. “We never made any decision to endorse any candidate. We have no preferred candidate. All we can do is pray for the best of the three candidates, who will use the position to serve God and humanity. “I tell you the truth as a servant of the Lord. I have asked those involved for explanations and they have apologized but the damage they have done to me and to CAN is difficult to repair. In my case, no issue in my life has embarrassed me like this. PREMIUM TIMES has learned that the president of the CAN has instructed the Secretary General, Mr. Daramola, to immediately circulate a press release in which he retracts his previous statement and states that the CAN was backing the Mr. Gadzama. Mr. Daramola could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
