FAAN speaks about bandit attack at Kaduna airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) provided more details of the armed attack at Kaduna airport on Saturday and confirmed that the attackers killed a member of staff. The agency said a “group of bandits” attacked the Runway 05 axis but were repelled by security forces. He said normalcy has since been restored at the airport and security officials recovered two motorcycles abandoned by the bandits. Airport manager Amina Salami had previously confirmed the attack, saying that the bandits invaded the airport through the perimeter fence from a nearby forest around 1 p.m. She said a security guard patrolling the tarmac was shot by assailants before soldiers, drawn by the sound of gunfire, responded. The attack delayed the takeoff of a flight to Lagos. The Kaduna state government also confirmed the incident. Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i praised the security forces for their prompt response to the attack and for repelling the attackers, and expressed condolences to the victim’s family, said State Internal Security and Home Affairs Commissioner Samuel Aruwan. FAAN said in a statement on Twitter that a reinforcement team from the Nigerian Defense Academy was on the ground to ensure the safety of airport workers/users. “The Authority takes this opportunity to sympathize with the family and friends of the victim of this unfortunate incident,” said the statement signed by Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, Ag. General Manager, Corporate Affairs. Deadly gangs the government refers to as bandits have been operating in northwest Nigeria for years, kidnapping and killing thousands. The attack on the Kaduna airport appears to be one of the most daring of the bandits.
