A former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Aliyu, announced on Wednesday that he was running to become the next governor of Jigawa state. Aliyu, ruling party member Congress of all progressivesrepresented Birnin Kudu/Buji in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. Speaking to reporters in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa state, Aliyu urged state governor Muhammed Badaru not to interfere in the election of the party’s gubernatorial candidate. He said that the governor must be fair and just to allow democratic processes to prevail. “We, the nine candidates for governor under the APC, know each other, we respect each other, we are in contact with ourselves, we are not in a fighting career but rather to the exalted position to serve the people. “Though I don’t doubt Governor Badaru’s impartiality and transparency as he confirmed on three occasions at a party stakeholder meeting that he has no candidates and promised to make sure APC does not fail in the upcoming general election in Jigawa,” said the Mr. Aliyu said. Aliyu said that if he were elected governor, he would prioritize agriculture, which he described as the backbone of the Jigawa people. “We recognize the efforts of successive governments to revolutionize the agricultural sector since its creation, however, the state continues to be among those with a relatively high severity and incidence of poverty in the country. “The per capita income is less than 2 dollars per person. To this end, if given the mandate, due attention will be given to farming to make it profitable. “We intend to provide many interventions that will include the provision of subsidized fertilizers, improved seedlings, small pieces of machinery, special attention will be paid to land preparation. Regarding health, Mr. Aliyu said he was aware that the state has high mortality and morbidity rates, particularly among women and children. “To address the challenges, my government, if mandated, will need to devise means to exploit its potential to make the necessary improvements for effective and efficient health care services in the state,” he said.
