FEC approves N29.2bn for rehabilitation of Zaria-Funtua road, others

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N29.2 billion for the completion and rehabilitation of road projects in some parts of the country. Public Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola revealed this while briefing House of Representatives correspondents at the end of the Council meeting, chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja on Wednesday. Mr. Fashola revealed that N9.4 billion of the amount was an increase for the Zaria-Funtua highway linking Kaduna and Katsina states. He said: “Three memorandums were submitted by the Ministry to the Federal Executive Council. “The first was for the contract extension of the Zaria to Funtua section of the Zaria-Sokoto-Birnin-Kebbi highway. “The increase was N9.446 billion, which will result in an increase in the contract price to a total of N16.924 billion. “The extension contemplates an extension of the scope of the works in that section, from 26 kilometers to a total of 64 kilometers. “It also contemplates the improvement of the pavement from a laterite-based pavement to a cement-based pavement, a mixture of concrete and stone. “It also provides for extensive drainage work to accommodate the increased rainfall flow and flood patterns we have seen in recent years. The Council approved that memorandum.” He said that the second approval focused on the activities of the Federal Highway Conservation Agency (FERMA). “The second memorandum was presented by the Secretariat on behalf of one of its parastatals, the Federal Highway Conservation Agency (FERMA), with statutory responsibility for the maintenance and rehabilitation of certain roads. “And in this sense, FERMA requested and the Council approved the award of contracts to rehabilitate the Kwayakusar-Milda highway in Borno. The value of the prize is N6, 271,985,441.20”, he explained. He also said that more than N13 billion has been approved for the rehabilitation of a road in Abia state. “The third, which the Council approved today, was the rehabilitation of the Uturu-Isikwato-Akara road in Abia,” he added.
