Gunmen attack another funeral in Anambra

Gunmen attacked a burial site in Ndingbu village, Nnewi South Local Government Area Anambra Statesoutheastern Nigeria. The attack comes less than two weeks after a similar attack occurred in the Ebenebe community in the state’s Awka North Local Government Area, where several people were killed by gunmen suspected of being members of a cult group. . The latest attack occurred on Friday. The armed men were said to have targeted the guards who were providing security at the burial of an as-yet-unidentified person. Amaechi Odoh, a resident of the area, told PREMIUM TIMES that gunmen stormed the burial site and attacked vigilantes said to be members of Ebube Agu, a government-backed security outfit in the southeast. He said some residents suffered gunshot wounds in the attack, but no lives were lost. “They (the family) invited the members of Ebube Agu to ensure the safety of the burial. No one was killed, just some people were hit by bullets,” Odoh said. Anambra state police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the attack, said Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng ordered a manhunt for the fleeing gunmen. He said the police had no advance notice of the burial. Police officers have been deployed to the area and normalcy has been restored, he said. Mr. Ikenga, deputy superintendent of police, said the gunmen further attacked a vigilante office, torched the vigilante’s operating vehicle and kidnapped a member of Ebube Agu in the Utuh community, within Nnewi South itself. He urged residents of the area to help the police with relevant information that will help the police in their investigation and operation. He assured that the police and other security agencies are firm in providing security to the inhabitants of the state.
