Gunmen attack checkpoint, kill police

A police officer was killed on Wednesday afternoon when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint along the Enugu-Abakaliki highway in Nigeria’s southeastern Ebonyi state. The gunmen, about three of them, were said to be on a motorcycle. They reportedly opened fire on the police officers, killing one of them instantly. Officers responded, killing one of the gunmen while the other two escaped on the motorcycle. The incident caused panic in the area as merchants, store owners, motorists and bystanders ran for safety. Police spokesman in the state, Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident. However, he said he did not yet have details of what happened. “I can’t give details right now. I have called the area DPO and am still waiting for details,” she said. “People say that a policeman was shot dead, but for now I can’t confirm it. “There is also another rumor that one of the gunmen was arrested. But all the information is still rumours. Details will come when we get a full report from the DPO,” Anyanwu said. The southeast has continued to witness deadly attacks by gunmen suspected of being members of the outlaws Biafran Indigenous People (IPOB). Police and other security agencies are often targets of attacks. IPOB, a secessionist group, has continued to deny responsibility for the attacks. IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is detained in Abuja, where he is facing trial for terrorism.
