How Tinubu facilitated my appointment as Lagos Police Commissioner — Ex-IGP Okiro

A former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, has revealed that he was appointed Police Commissioner in Lagos State based on a special request from Bola Tinubu, who was then Governor of the state. Mr. Okiro stated this on Friday during his inauguration as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Defect Together Movement for Tinubu/Shettima 2023. Tinubu, who was the governor of Lagos state between 1999 and 2007, is the president of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections. For his part, Mr. Okiro served as Lagos State Police Commissioner from 1999 to 2003 and was appointed IGP in 2007 by the late President Umar Yar’Adua. Okiro said he was transferred to Lagos State as Commissioner of Police by the then IGP, Musiliu Smith, who is from Lagos State, following a request from Mr. Tinubu. He said he had known the APC presidential candidate since the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) days, when he was in Lagos state as deputy commissioner of police operations. Mr. Okiro stated that Mr. Tinubu applied for it in 1999 due to the activities of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) and criminal elements in the state at the time. He recounted that Mr. Tinubu told the then IGP that “if you want Lagos to be peaceful, you should send Okiro to Lagos.” “Asiwaju Tinubu is indeed a friend. I have known him since he was a middle administrative officer, deputy commissioner of police (operations) in Ikeja during the NADECO days. He was a kingmaker for NADECO. He left the country, came back and became Governor of Lagos State. “He made a request to the IG (Mr. Smith) — Lagos was in trouble, crime was at its peak — robberies, murders, kidnappings and the OPC were at their peak. People were leaving Lagos state. Asiwaju made a special request to the IG. That was how I found myself as a police commissioner in Lagos state,” he said. I have no doubt that he will replicate what he did in Lagos”. Speaking on behalf of the group, Umar Yakassai said that Mr. Okiro was chosen as the BOT chairman due to his closeness to the APC presidential candidate. “We estimate that in view of his (Okiro’s) long-term closeness with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and an enviable relationship over time, as when the former was Lagos State Police Commissioner and Asiwaju was the top performing Executive Governor, he has the unique vantage point to encourage other eminent persons of net worth to join, to support our humble efforts,” Mr. Yakassai said. The campaigns will officially begin on September 28, according to the schedule and schedule of activities of the INEC. Tinubu will face former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labor Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party and others in the February presidential election.
