INEC will close the candidate nomination portal before June 17, July 15

the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties that their candidate nomination portal for the 2023 general election will automatically close at 6 p.m. June 17 for national elections and 6 p.m. July 15 for state elections. INEC President Mahmood Yakubu made the warning at the commission’s meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Thursday in Abuja. Mr. Yakubu reminded political parties that all party primaries for 2023 end on Thursday (June 9), while nomination of candidates began on June 10. “For next week starting tomorrow (June 10), all political parties must present their list of candidates for the national elections (Presidential/Vice-Presidential, Senators and House of Representatives) no later than Friday (June 17) . “For the state elections (Governorship/Vice Governorship and State Assemblies), the list of candidates will be uploaded from July 1 to July 15, as already provided in the Schedule and Calendar of Activities for the General Elections of 2023 already published. by the Commission. “All political parties must upload the details of their candidates for each electoral district in the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal (ICNP),” he said. Mr. Yakubu added that in order to achieve the goal, four officials recommended by each of the 18 political parties received training on the procedure for uploading nomination forms to the dedicated web portal. He said that Confidential Access Codes have already been delivered to the portal to each political party to facilitate the loading of their applications. “To emphasize, the Commission wishes to remind political parties that only the names of the candidates that emerged from the Democratic primaries as provided by Sec. 84 of the Election Act of 2022 will be submitted to the Commission. Similarly, the list of all presidential and gubernatorial candidates must be accompanied by the names of their running mates (ie, vice president and lieutenant governor candidates) without whom the nomination is invalid. “All nominations must be uploaded to the portal on or before the deadline dates. The portal will automatically close at 6:00 pm on Friday (June 17) for national elections and at 6:00 pm on Friday (July 15) for state elections. “With this innovation, the Commission has eliminated the physical interface between party officials and INEC staff in order to present the list of candidates for the 2023 general elections,” said Mr. Yakubu. It also revealed that a Nomination Center has been established at the commission’s headquarters to receive and process all political party nominations for the 2023 general election. He said the center includes dedicated phone lines to serve as a help desk for anyone who might need help. Mr. Yakubu, who led journalists to the nominations center located inside INEC headquarters, said that INEC expects each political party to nominate around 1,500 candidates for the 2023 general election within the window available for the exercise. He clarified that the center was basically for the INEC staff to process the applications presented by the political parties, and not for the use of the political parties since they could upload their applications from anywhere. However, he advised political parties not to wait until the last day before starting to upload their nominations to the commission’s dedicated portal, as the deadline remained sacrosanct. “My advice to the political parties is that since they have concluded their primaries, they should start rising from tomorrow, Friday, June 10. “That they don’t wait until the last day, which is June 17, because if there are difficulties on the last day they won’t be able to go up after 6 in the afternoon. “So they should start going up earlier so that when there are problems they can be dealt with before 6 in the afternoon, but this center is essentially for the commission. No more human interface.” He said the portal would record the exact time and other details that a political party enters the portal to address situations where the political party enters the INEC office at the last minute, rushing to meet the deadline.
