INEC will solve BVAS challenges before Ekiti and Osun surveys

The president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the Commission will resolve the challenges arising from the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) before the next electoral rounds. Mr. Yakubu stated this during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Tuesday. He spoke in the context of the BVAS malfunctioning during the February 12 area council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Although the INEC had expressed confidence in the device after the gubernatorial election last November in Anambra state, the system performed below expectations during the FCT survey as a result of which many people were unable to accredit themselves for vote. In addition to reports of dysfunctional BVAS during the FCT survey, PREMIUM TIMES also witnessed high voter turnout in some UPs, among other inconsistencies. Yakubu acknowledged the challenges, but assured that the Commission would resolve them before the upcoming Ekiti and Osun elections in June and July, respectively, as well as the 2023 general election. “When the commission presented the BVAS last year, the compact device was intended to achieve two goals. “First is the verification of the authenticity of the Permanent Voter Credentials (PVCs) and the authentication of the electors’ fingerprint or facial during accreditation. “Secondly, replace the Z-pad to upload the results of the voting unit to INEC’s Results Visualization Portal (IReV) in real time on election day. Until now, the BVAS has performed optimally in verifying the authenticity of the PVCs and uploading images of the results of the Voting Unit in the IReV. “We will review and improve its functionality for biometric voter accreditation in the upcoming gubernatorial midterms and off-season ahead of the 2023 general election,” Yakubu said. He also promised that the commission would guarantee a greater decongestion of the voting units in the next elections.
