Kidnapping of Methodist prelate is ‘national shame’: Church official

Elder of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Wesley Cathedral, Umuahia, Aaron Akabuokwu, says the kidnapping of Methodist prelate Samuel Kanu is a sacrilege and a national shame. The prelate was kidnapped along with the Methodist bishop of Owerri, Dennis Mark, the prelate’s chaplain and driver. They were kidnapped on Sunday by armed men operating on the Okigwe/Isuochi axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway. The clerics were said to have been on their way to Owerri airport en route to Lagos after a Sunday service, when they were attacked and taken away. The kidnappers have contacted relatives of the victims and are demanding a ransom of 100 million naira, according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN). Speaking about the development in an interview with reporters in Umuahia on Monday, Mr Akabuokwu said he received the news of the kidnapping with “gross surprise”. He said: “It is a sacrilege, an abomination and the height of national and international shame. “It is unfortunate that a man of such caliber could be taken to the bush for the sake of money. “Everyone should know that the Methodist Church in Nigeria is in mourning. “We are in a very sad mood about the ugly incident that happened. It goes to show the moral turpitude in this nation. There is no regard for the sacred. “We trust that God will use what has happened to wake up our political leaders of their responsibility.” Akabuokwu said the incident spelled disaster for the country. He said the church has been praying since Sunday to seek God’s intervention. “We trust that God will manifest his power and very soon the victims will regain their freedom,” said the priest.
