LASTMA Apprehends Two Officers for Illegal Conduct

the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested two of its Special Transit Mayors (STM) for illegally apprehending a logistics motorcyclist and identity theft. Bolaji Oreagba, General Manager of LASTMA, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN). Mr. Oreagba said that the two special traffic mayors, Ibrahim Abu and Olamide Oshin, were arrested by a patrol team from LASTMA headquarters on Wednesday, August 17. He explained that the patrol team arrested them at the Sheraton Hotel bus stop on Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way for their illegal act. Mr. Oreagba said there have been incidents of impersonation of LASTMA staff by some unscrupulous members of the public in the past. He said the agency was committed to handling such cases under state law. “Following investigations, Ibrahim Jubril Abu, a true LASTMA STM, obtained the reflective jacket number of another mayor and printed a false identity card for Olamide Oshin to perpetuate fraudulent acts. ”Abu thus stirred up public sentiments against the legal officers in traffic management duties. “The two culprits, who have been handed over to the police in Area F, are cooling off in police custody. “It is pertinent to point out here that the creation of LASTMA STM was a strategy adopted to increase the voluntary assistance of authorized traffic personnel in traffic management. “However, the STM’s operational guideline does not authorize them to apprehend traffic offenders,” he said. LASTMA’s General Manager added that, not long ago, the agency noticed a fake online posting asking for membership and training as Mayor of Special Traffic for a fee. Oreagba also promised that the culprits would be prosecuted to deter others with similar intentions. He urged the public to always say something when they see something instead of attacking government officials who are carrying out their legal duties. He noted that, unfortunately, some logistics bikers were already gathering at the scene of the incident, in order to launch an attack on LASTMA officials. Mr. Oreagba added that the agency was advocating voluntary compliance to ensure better and sustainable law and order on the roads of Lagos.
