More than a billion uncensored pornographic films seized in 2021 – Board of Censors

Executive Director, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB)Adedayo Thomas said that around 1 billion copies of uncensored, unrated and pornographic movies were seized in 2021. Thomas revealed in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Lagos. Thomas said that the pornographic videos, in the form of compact discs, were seized in installments in different states of the Federation and burned immediately. According to him, the NFVCB achieved this with the collaboration of security agents. Thomas said the board of censors was not resting on its oars to ensure that children and youth were not exposed to obscene videos and videos with vulgar language. He told NAN that the NFVCB had been constantly committed to increasing the ability of its staff to carry out their duties in a responsible and timely manner. “In 2021, we were able to seize more than a billion pieces of pornographic videos; We will get more out of this year. “Most of the people who were dealing with these were retailers. “We are working to curb the circulation of these uncensored and unrated works going through broadcast companies,” he said. He said that some staff members and security officials were usually on the ground to track the activities of illegal operators in the industry. Sensitization According to him, NFVCB is also participating in a media literacy campaign in high schools and colleges to sensitize them against unlicensed and uncensored films. He said the campaign would enlighten the younger generation about the adverse effects of producing movies against the nation’s culture, which would guide against recurrence in the future. Mr. Thomas noted that in trying to curb the circulation of obscene videos, the NFVCB sought to professionalize the film industry so that only films produced by legally registered film producers would be censored. He said that with this arrangement, he “believed that registered film producers would be familiar with the dictates of the Board of Censors and would not produce films with content that was not certified.” “We try to professionalize the film industry following the dictates of the law that established the NFVCB. “The law establishes that anyone who is not a member of a professional association or guild cannot submit films to be censored, so professional associations must inform the Board of Censors. “With this development that started last year, we have registered 18 associations and guilds that have registered with us. “The multiplier effect of this is to identify who belongs to this industry, which, in turn, will help us ensure that unclassified, uncensored and pornographic works are not circulating. “We can’t sleep and leave our children’s future with bullies,” he told NAN. Mr. Thomas said that most of the NFVCB’s activities are aimed at ensuring that President Muhammadu Buhari’s ease of doing business policy is updated. He said that Nigeria needs a healthy environment for businesses to thrive. This, he says, “requires the NFVCB to work only with registered filmmakers to encourage professionalism because Nigeria is not a dumping ground for everyone.” “We are constantly working to make society a better place,” he said.
