Nigerian Army to deploy 197 soldiers to Gambia

The nigerian army it is set to deploy 197 troops for the ECOWAS Peacekeeping Mission in The Gambia. Army Headquarters Operations Chief Olufemi Akinjobi, a major general, revealed this on Thursday at the graduation ceremony for Nigeria’s 7th Company, which will soon be heading to the tiny West African state. The ceremony was held at the Martin Luther Agwai International Peacekeeping and Leadership Center, Jaji, Kaduna State. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that, so far, Nigeria had deployed six separate companies in The Gambia. Akinjobi said that Nigeria was committed to deploying quality peacekeepers for world peace and security. NAN reports that of the 197 heading to Gambia, 185 are soldiers and 12 are officers. Mr. Akinjobi was represented by Zakari Abubakar, Major General and Director of Peacekeeping Operations at Army Headquarters. He explained that Nigeria has successfully participated in 40 peacekeeping missions around the world and deployed more than 100,000 peacekeepers since 1960. He argued that the ECOWAS Mission to The Gambia was established as an intervention mission to resolve the constitutional crisis that followed the disputed 2016 presidential election. The mission, he said, had helped restore peace and stability. Earlier, the Commander of the Center, Auwal Fagge, a Major General, explained that the center had updated the troops in the last four weeks on some tactical aspects of peacekeeping training. The aspects, he said, included security at the base camp, patrolling, cordoning off and searching, as well as escorting personalities, among others. He urged the troops to be good ambassadors for Nigeria and apply what they have learned. He asked me to comply with the mandate of the mission and strictly adhere to the rules of engagement. Mr. Fagge also tasked the troops to carry out their duties while keeping in mind the multinational nature of the mission, as well as the cultural and religious diversities in the operating environment. The center had deployed 173 troops to Guinea Bissau on April 12 for a peacekeeping mission.
