Nine people die in car accident in Gombe

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe state has confirmed the death of nine people in a car accident that occurred in the state on Wednesday night. FRSC Gombe State Command Corps Commander Felix Theman, who confirmed the accident to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Thursday, said the accident occurred at the Bomala Junction around 08:40 p.m. Theman said the accident was the result of brake failure on a trailer carrying gallons of vegetable oil. According to him, 20 people were involved in the accident and 11 suffered varying degrees of injuries. He said the injured people were taken to Gombe Specialist Hospital and Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe (FTHG) for treatment. He also said that the bodies of the seven deceased were deposited in the morgue of the Specialty Hospital while the other two were deposited in the FTHG morgue. According to him, 21 vehicles were involved in the accidents, including tricycles and motorcycles. Theman warned drivers against speeding, especially in built-up areas, adding that the speed limit for such areas should not exceed 40 km/h. “If you look at what happened at the Bomala junction, the driver was speeding and it’s a built-up area and when the brake failed, see what we have.” He said that if drivers followed speed limits, accident damage would be minimized. The commander of the sector advised the inhabitants of the state to desist from invading the roads and prioritize their security over other interests.
