Owo Attack: Akeredolu Warns Against Visiting Southwest With War

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has warned that the population of the south-west will not tolerate another unprovoked attack on the region under any pretext. Akeredolu spoke Tuesday at the Government House in Akure while receiving Governors Dapo Abiodun from Ogun State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu from Lagos State and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq from Kwara State. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the immediate former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, also joined the entourage to pay a condolence visit to Mr. Akeredolu for the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack in the Owo local government area. Akeredolu, who said the people of Ondo state and the southwestern region in general, had always come to the country in peace and unity, described the Owo attack as “one of many.” He thanked the governors for their solidarity, which he described as not only symbolic but important, noting that the people of the Southwest region have always maintained peace and unity in the country. “We are part of this country and we have always come to this country in peace and have kept the peace. We have always been trying to keep Nigeria because we believe in Nigeria. “Somebody point to an incident where we got out of our enclave or got out of this peaceful environment and went to cause trouble elsewhere. Let them tell us. “We have come to this country in peace, and now people want to visit us with war. They want to maim and kill us; is not easy. “It is a terrible assault. I told people that if we were at war and we were armed and we faced each other, in one day 40 people on our side would not die. But this is not war, we were not at war. “This is an assault on us, on our psyche. We can’t go on like this. We believe in this place, we believe in the South-Western region, we believe in Yoruba. Is Yoruba part of the Nigeria we believe in? Yes. “But I thank you for your solidarity. You’ve come all the time and we’ve always worked together, all of us,” she said. According to Mr. Akeredolu, “If you make it to the scene, I’m sure you’ll be in tears. These criminals, these animals in human skin, what they did was horrendous.” “They did not come to kidnap, they did not come to steal, they did not take a penny. They entered the church and fired at everything in sight,” the governor said. He announced the donation of N25 million from each of the governors, for a total of N75 million for the victims of the attack. Mr. Abiodun revealed that the region will soon come together to take a position to further consolidate and improve the security architecture in the area. “Of course, we have met and we have condemned this act that seems most regrettable to us. His Excellency, this is one attack too many. “We know that you have been at the forefront to ensure the peace and security of your people. In fact, you are the champion of Amotekun in the South-West. “We, your brothers, wonder if this is more personal because of the role you have played in ensuring our area is safe. “One wonders if there is a particular reason why this attack was launched on his hometown of Owo. We are deeply hurt, we are deeply saddened and we pity you. “We pray for the lives of the deceased, we pray that Almighty God forgive their sins and accept their souls. “We sympathize with their families, we sympathize with those who are still in hospitals,” Abiodun said.
