Owo Attack: One More Death Recorded

One more person has died from injuries sustained during the terror attack on St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state. The death brings the death toll to 41, since the attack on June 5, 2022. Ondo State Information and Guidance Commissioner Bamidele Ademola-Olateju told reporters on Thursday that the death toll now stands at 41, while 17 people are still hospitalized. As she commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those still in hospital, Ms. Ademola-Olateju reaffirmed the commitment of the State Government to build a memorial site in honor of all the victims. The terrorists attacked the church with explosives and fired on worshipers, killing their victims, including two children and a police officer. Last month, Amotekun Corps officers said they had arrested some suspects involved in the June 5 terror attack. However, they did not give details. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu also enacted an amendment to the Ondo State Security Network Agency Act. The governor, who approved the bill in the State Executive Chamber of his office, noted that the new amendment became imperative in light of heightened insecurity across the state. He assured that the amended law would improve the security architecture of the state and help the Amotekun Corps perform better. The governor thanked the State House of Assembly for the swift passage of the bill. Corps Commander Adetunji Adeleye, who also serves as the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, thanked Mr. Akeredolu for agreeing to the amendment to the law that established the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun. He assured that the development would expand the operational capabilities of the state security team. The Governor also announced the procurement of newly purchased operational vehicles to be distributed to all security operatives in the state including the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, State Security Directorate and Amotekun Corps to enhance the performance of state security agencies.
