Police arrest 30 suspected cultists in Edo

Chidi Nwabuzor, the police spokesman in the state, revealed this while addressing reporters about the command’s achievements in its fight against cultism in the state. Police superintendent Nwabuzor said the suspects included seven women and 23 men. They were arrested in different places within Benin, he said. He said the police anti-cult unit raided criminal hideouts and black spots as a crackdown on criminals in the state, following recent cult-related clashes in the state. “During the raid, 30 suspects, including 23 men and seven women, were arrested. The suspects confessed to being members of various cult groups in the state.” The police spokesman said some of the suspects were members of the Eiye, Buccaneers and Maphite fraternity. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reported that the suspects denied being members of cult groups. They said they only learned why they were arrested during their parade at police headquarters. One suspect, Rose Okafor, 40, said police arrested her while she was selling drinks at a hotel. “I was arrested by the police around 9 at night. Five of us were arrested in the same place and we were not told why we were arrested. “We are only hearing it now that we are cultists. I am not a cultist,” she said.
