Sanwo-Olu submits nomination form, says will secure second term

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu submitted his nomination form to re-run for a second term on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. Mr. Sanwo-Olu presented the form on Tuesday at the Abuja International Conference Center. APC’s expression of interest and nomination forms for the gubernatorial race cost 50 million naira. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Sanwo-Olu said that he is optimistic of winning his re-election due to his performance in office in the last three years in office. He said his administration has repositioned Lagos from what it used to be under the previous administration. “And we’ve grown the city from what it used to be three or four years ago before we took over. It now receives the largest foreign direct investment because the environment is safe and secure,” he said. Mr. Sanwo-Olu also spoke about the South West APC presidential hopefuls meeting he organized in Lagos last week. The meeting called by the former governors of the states of Osun and Ogun, Bisi Akande and Segun Osoba, was attended by some of the candidates, but the expected outcome was not achieved. “So we are not fed up, we were honest with ourselves and we hope that in future commitments, all the aspirations we have in our region come true,” said the governor. Mr. Sanwo-Olu was elected in 2019 after then-governor Akinwunmi Ambode lost the party’s ticket, after failing to get the go-ahead from Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the APC. Last month, the Governor’s Advisory Council, APC’s highest decision-making body in Lagos, adopted Mr. Sanwo-Olu as the party’s candidate, while Mr. Tinubu also upheld the GAC’s decision. It is unclear if anyone chose the APC nomination form to challenge Mr. Sanwo-Olu. Meanwhile, Mohammed Idris, the publisher of Blueprint Newspaper, also submitted his nomination form to compete for the governorship of Niger state. Idris filed the nomination form Tuesday to succeed Governor Sani Bello of Niger state, who will complete his second term in May 2023. According to the APC schedule, the form sale closed on May 10, while the filing deadline is May 11.
