Senate and Representatives Vote Against Bill to Reserve Legislative Seats for Women

The bill to create an additional 111 seats for women in the National Assembly has been defeated in the House of Representatives. The bill also seeks to create additional seats in the State Assembly Chambers exclusively for women. It is entitled, ‘Bill to Amend the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide a Special Seat for Women in the National and State Houses of Assembly; and for Related Matters.’ He failed to get the required number of votes to escalate during clause-by-clause consideration in the Senate and House on Tuesday. In the House of Representatives, only 81 legislators voted in favor, while it required 240 votes to advance. The House also rejected the affirmative action bill to assign positions for women in the administration of political parties. 192 legislators voted against, 109 voted for.
