Senate praises Buhari for enacting electoral bill

The Senate has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for enacting the Election Law Amendment Bill of 2022. Senate Media and Advertising Committee Chairman Ajibola Basiru made the eulogy in a statement in Abuja on Friday. He said that the Act was now the legislative framework for the conduct of elections in Nigeria. Mr. Basiru congratulated the 9th Assembly for the innovative provisions of the Electoral Act that addressed obvious flaws that had prevented credible elections in Nigeria. He identified the holding of primaries, campaign spending, the use of technological devices in the elections and the electronic transmission of results as some of the reforms introduced that would guarantee the credibility of the elections in the country. The legislator stated that the Senate had taken note of Section 84 (12) of the Act, especially the concerns raised by the President, and assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would give the section the desired legislative attention. Similarly, Senate Vice President Ovie Omo-Agege said that Mr. Buhari had written his name in gold to sign the bill. Mr. Omo-Agege’s special media and advertising adviser, Yomi Odunuga, said this in a statement in Abuja on Friday. He expressed his joy that the country will go to the next general elections with a new electoral legal framework. The vice president of the Senate recalled that although the process within the framework of the VIII Chamber of Senators was plagued by misgivings and mutual bitterness, the electoral reform for the IX National Assembly continued to be a priority on his legislative agenda. “The 9th Senate has promised to leave a lasting legacy for Nigerians. “Today’s development adds to the list of historic legislation that has desecrated previous Assemblies, which has been approved by the ninth Senate,” he said.
