Sentenced to life in prison for raping and robbing a student

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Court on Tuesday sentenced a man, Collins Okechukwu, to life in prison for raping and robbing a 25-year-old female student (name withheld) at the University of Lagos. In sentencing, Judge Abiola Soladoye, who described Mr. Okechukwu as a “pathological liar”, held that the prosecution proved the charges of rape and robbery against him beyond reasonable doubt. The judge sentenced Mr. Okechukwu to life in prison for rape and 21 years in prison for robbery. The judge, however, ordered that the two sentences be carried out simultaneously. She said: “The defendant’s testimony portrayed him as a pathological liar in that he claimed the Lagos University Guest House was full and the survivor was starved for sex, causing them to have sex in the bare floor. “This is amazing and watery. “The defendant lured the survivor into the administration block, drew a gun, raped her and stole her valuables thereafter. “The defendant’s claim that he met the survivor at the boarding house and she agreed to have sex with him was constantly mixed with irregularities and deemed unreliable. “The defendant is found guilty of both offenses and therefore sentenced to life in prison for rape and 21 years in prison for robbery. “The sentences will run concurrently. She should desist from giving her numbers for unnecessary games,” the judge said. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that four witnesses testified at the trial and three pieces of evidence were presented. According to the prosecution attorney, Peter Owolabani, the convicted man committed the crimes on December 17, 2017, at 9:00 p.m., behind the UNILAG Faculty of Arts Building. He said the convict also robbed the survivor of her phones, money and a gold chain. He also claimed that the survivor met the convict a year after the incident, invited him to his alleged birthday party, and managed to get him arrested.
