‘Tinubu is a godfather like Awolowo, Azikiwe, Sardauna’ — Alake

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu Ballhe is a godfather like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello, APC Presidential Campaign Council spokesman Dele Alake has said. Mr. Alake said this while appearing on “Politics Today,” a political show on Channels TV on Friday. He said the word “godfather” has been bastardized by those who are envious of Tinubu, adding that many want to become godfathers but are too lazy to work for it. Mr. Alake, former commissioner of information and strategy in Lagos state, Mr. Tinubu, like those leaders of the first republic, is a godfather because he has produced leaders. Tinubu is widely believed to be the de facto godfather of politics in Lagos and some southwestern states. “The notion of godfather has been given a negative connotation in Nigeria’s political lexicon by those who are unnecessarily envious of others, not because they don’t want to be godfathers,” he said. “There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a best man as long as it is public spirited. “Awolowo, our sage, was godfather, why? Because he produced many leaders. Our leader, Ahmadu Bello, was a godfather because he produced leaders. Even Nnamdi Azikwe was godfather because he also fathered leaders. “So, therefore, why should Tinubu’s be given a negative connotation by those who are lazy, indolent, lethargic and unable to work assiduously and attain a political height through which they could also develop other leaders to become positive sponsors? There is nothing inherently wrong with being a godfather as long as you have a public spirit.” Alake also justified the state political machine’s decision to deny former Governor Akinwumi Ambode a second term. Ambode, who was Lagos state governor from 2015 to 2019, fell out with Tinubu and was defeated in the primary by Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Local hospital lacks technology to treat Tinubu In response to Mr. Tinubu’s background in the health sector and his history of medical tourism abroad, Mr. Alake said that his director frequents local hospitals. However, he said that in the case of tertiary health care, a nation may not have it all. “Don’t forget that we don’t have everything. Governance is a continuous work in progress. No society in the world has achieved it in all areas at the same time. Every day I have seen him taking medication, following the advice of his local doctors. He visits the local hospitals whenever he is not willing to be treated like any of us. “However, there is what we call tertiary medical services. At that level, you can’t have all the latest medical tech in your environment at the same time. If you’re sick and you don’t have the technology, should you die? Mr. Tinubu’s health has been the subject of debate, particularly on social media. Last year, Tinubu spent three months in the UK after knee surgery.
