Trafficking Victim Becomes Villain, Sentenced to Prison

That Edomwonyi, a 24-year-old former victim of human trafficking, has been sentenced to one year in prison for human trafficking. Nduka Nwanwenne, zone commander, National Agency for the Prohibition of Human Trafficking (NAPTIP), Benin Zonal Command, revealed this in a statement in Benin on Saturday. Ms Edomwonyi was sentenced Thursday in Benin for the same crime from which she was rescued at the Seme borders a few years ago, according to Mr Nwanwenne. Nwanwenne said that the convict, a housewife and mother of five children, was tried before Judge Irele Ifeje of the State Superior Court, Court 3, in Benin. It added that Ms. Edomwonyi was charged with engaging in acts of human trafficking contrary to Section 13(4)c of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015. The zone commander further explained that the convict had recruited a 14-year-old girl for his sister who resides in Burkina Faso. “Upon arrival in Burkina Faso, the victim was subjected to beatings, denial of food and enslavement when she initially opposed engaging in prostitution.
