Two dead, five injured in clash between farmers and herders in Jigawa

Police say two people have been killed and five others injured in a clash between farmers and cattle herders in the Guri local government of Jigawa state. Police spokesman in the state, Lawan Adam, said the confrontation occurred on Friday at Magirami Bush in the area. However, residents feared more people would die as many were still missing as of Friday. PREMIUM TIMES reported that the standoff began after suspected herders killed a farmer with a bow and arrow after they invaded his farm. Angry residents stormed the local weekly market in Guri on Friday and attacked herdsmen in indiscriminate retaliation. Police said officers from their divisional headquarters in Guri, Operation Puff Adder and Operation Sallama, led by Muhammad Usman, had been immediately recruited at the scene. Police spokesman Adam said officers recovered the bodies of 35-year-old Umar Abdulrauf, a resident of Guri, and another of a man who has not yet been identified. He said five injured men were rescued and taken to Hadejia General Hospital for treatment. Adam said Adamu Ahmadu, 25, from the Galdimari Fulani settlement was arrested in connection with the incident. “Police Commissioner, Jigawa State Police Command, Aliyu Tafida, and other high-ranking officials visited the scene and assessed the incident. The area was fortified, reinforcements were deployed, surveillance, foot and vehicle patrols were intensified. “Meanwhile, law and order was restored, activities were running smoothly without any danger in the area. “The ongoing investigation, the effort to arrest the fleeing suspects is underway, upon completion of the investigation the suspect will be charged in court for prosecution,” Adam said in a statement on Saturday. Guri and neighboring Kirikasamma in Jigawa have fertile land suitable for agriculture and grazing. Control of the land has led to bloody conflicts between farmers and herders over the years. Following incessant clashes between farmers and herders in the area, critics have accused the Jigawa government of handling the crisis with childish gloves.
