Two teenagers face trial for alleged murder of Nigerian pastor

The Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos state on Monday ordered two teenagers to stand trial at a higher court for the alleged murder of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor. The accused are Faruk Muhammed and Kasali Jamiu, aged 16 and 19, respectively. Chief Magistrate Olatunbosun Adeola gave the order on the advice of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). It discharged two men, Mumuni Toheeb, 21, and Mubarak Soliu, 20, who were tried together with the teenagers in the trial court. She fired Messrs. Toheeb and Soliu based on the DPP’s recommendation. Ms. Adeola adjourned the case until February 16, for the Nigerian Correctional Service to present Mr. Soliu in court to enforce the DPP’s advice. Soliu was absent from Monday’s proceedings. Mrs. Adeola ordered that the parties to the lawsuit appear before her on April 4, for the report on the presentation of the murder charge against the teenagers in the high court. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the four people were indicted on January 12 on a three-count charge of conspiracy, murder and receipt of stolen property. The teens faced the first two counts of conspiracy and murder, while the other two people were charged with receiving stolen property. The court remanded Mr. Muhammed to the Children’s Special Correctional Center in Oregon, Lagos State, while Mr. Jamiu was remanded to the Ikoyi Correctional Center. The court had granted Messrs. Toheeb and Soliu bail in the amount of N200,000 with two sureties each for the same amount. Prosecution attorney Julio Hodonu had said that the defendants committed the crimes on December 3, 2021, at Road 13, 6th Ave., FESTAC Town, Lagos State. He alleged that Messrs. Muhammed and Jamiu stabbed Babatunde Dada, an RCCG herdsman, and stole his Techno Spark S worth N60,000. He said the teenagers stabbed the pastor in the neck. According to him, Messrs. Toheeb and Soliu, in Ijora-Badia, Lagos State, received the stolen phone from the teenagers’ pastor with the intention of selling it. He told the court that the defendants were arrested in Ilorin and that the objects used in the alleged murder were recovered.
