Uber and Bolt drivers union in conflict over leadership

A leadership struggle is rocking the e-hailing drivers’ association, which comprises Uber and Bolt drivers, following the announcement of the removal of its president and national secretary. Joseph Adaraniwon, national publicity secretary of the Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association of Nigeria (PEDPAN), announced the removal of the leaders in a statement on Saturday. The statement said that the accusations of conspiracy and actions against the general goals and interests of the association led to the dismissal of Oluwaseun Shonuga and Islamiat Ajani as national president and national secretary, respectively. But in a quick reaction, Shonuga told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) that he was still the national president of PEDPAN. Shonuga added that those behind his alleged dismissal were suspended members who wanted power by all means without following the association’s constitution. “I am still the national president of PEDPAN, those who now claim to be national officials of PEDPAN do not have exercise certificates,” he said. Mr. Shonuga said that those behind his smear will soon face the full wrath of the law. “These people have been threatening me and I have been attacked on two different occasions for this issue. “They are the people who want to gain popularity by destroying my good work. “Those people have been disciplined and suspended indefinitely for not following our association’s rule of engagement,” he said. Mr. Shonuga said that the union removed members involved in anti-union activities from its social media platform, after due consultation, facts and evidence of their anti-union actions. Gbenga Ekundayo, president of the Lagos State Trade Union Congress, said the TUC had been working to resolve the current leadership crisis in PEDPAN. “We have advised them to set up their structures properly and let that structure guide the union. We came up with a 17 point MOU to address the issue and all parties involved agreed to it. “We are surprised to hear that the union is still experiencing some internal leadership issues. “We have notified our national body and are currently awaiting direction from them, to find lasting solutions to the crisis,” he said.
