UniCal VC urges women to break gender bias at home

florence obithe vice chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal)has called on women to break gender bias in their respective homes. Ms. Obi, a teacher, made the call during the Mother’s Week 2022 grand finale held at UniCal’s Chapel of Redemption, Calabar, on Sunday, with the theme: “Women stand up and take responsibility before the nations”. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that motherhood week activities began with the commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8 with activities including pidgin service. Ms. Obi said that most women were responsible for the bias in their homes, as they built it into children from infancy. “We create cradle bias when we start telling our children which chores are for boys and which are for girls. “We need to start talking to our kids about home equity; if we do that, our children will grow up with it and it will positively affect society,” she said. In her remarks, Abigail Ayi, president of the Redemption Chapel Women’s Fraternity, said many cultures around the world seem to favor boys over girls. Ms. Ayi said that it is up to families, churches and the nation to stop prejudice against girls and women and give them equal opportunities in health, education and political office, among others. He also pointed out that if women were to prophesy to the nations, they should avoid bitterness and malice and cultivate the habit of listening to and obeying the voice of God. For her part, guest speaker Ofonmbuk Archibong, senior pastor of Intercessors Bible Mission International, said that femininity was not a gender issue but a function of responsibility. Ms. Archibong, quoting from the Book of Jeremiah 29 Verse 11 and Matthew 28, verses five through 10, said that women must first discover their purpose before they can help anyone else. “The confusion of women is because they do not discover their purpose, you cannot love another person without first loving yourself. “You are responsible for your own happiness, don’t wait for someone else to come and make you happy because you can end up in depression,” he said.
