Uzodinma acquits Ebubeagu of the Imo murders

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has cleared Ebubeagu of the killings in the state. Ebubeagu was created in 2021 by the governors of the five southeastern states to help fight insecurity in the region, which has seen deadly attacks linked to Biafran turmoil by outlawed Biafran Indigenous Peoples. But the security team has been accused of extrajudicial killings such as in the tragic incident in July in which some Imo youths returning from a wedding ceremony were shot dead at close range. Ebubeagu agents were said to be responsible for the murder. the Amnesty International Nigeriain its reaction to the July killing, it said it has documented Ebubeagu’s involvement in extrajudicial killings, torture, extortion and other crimes, in response to the violence in the southeast. “It is appalling that unarmed young men who clearly posed no threat to anyone were shot dead, in total disregard for the right to life,” Osai Ojigho, director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said in a statement. “Such killings cannot be justified under any circumstances,” he added. No not Ebubeagu Governor Uzodinma, while defending Ebubeagu, said that members of the security team do not carry weapons, much less carry out sophisticated attacks. “Ebubeagu has no sophistication, like the kind of rifles bandits carry all the time. Ebubeagu are not armed,” Uzodinma said Tuesday night, while appearing as a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today. “Some of these bandits are now operating as Ebubeagu. Lately, we found out that the bandits would attack a particular place, and the next thing, because they have their syndicates, they would put up a propaganda that Ebubeagu has attacked. “But between those in charge of Ebubeagu and myself, and the security agencies, they know that Ebubeagu does not have the ability to attack with sophisticated weapons,” he said. The governor said that crime in Imo state has a “political undertone” and that critics of Ebubeagu are not interested in the “peaceful atmosphere” of the state. He said that what the Ebubeagu agents do is collect information about unusual movements in the communities and report it to the security agencies. “It is not a security force that goes to war,” he added. In response to a question, Governor Uzodinma said that the state government would prefer that Ebubeagu work with the security agencies, rather than the security team carrying weapons. “You know, the security provision like the police, the army, the navy and the air force are under the exclusive list. So, as a federative unit, I don’t know where I will get the mandate that will allow me to acquire sophisticated weapons to give them to the local population, like the members of Ebubeagu, who have not been trained,” said the governor.
