Why ban IPOB and not Miyetti Allah? – Soyinka

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has questioned the secessionist group’s ban, Biafran Indigenous People (IPOB) by the Nigerian government without doing the same to the cattle raising group, Miyetti Allah. Mr. Soyinka said this when he appeared as a guest on Newsnight, a pre-recorded program TV channels Program aired on Monday. IPOB is a separatist group leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra which they want to separate from the south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria. The government banned the separatist group in 2017, calling it a terrorist organization. But Soyinka expressed surprise that the government did not also ban Miyetti Allah despite the hate speech and attacks allegedly carried out by the group across the country. Recalling a threat statement credited to the Miyetti Allah spokesman, Soyinka suggested that those who invade communities and want to repeat the “history of conquest” should be arrested and banned. “Take for example when the Fulani herdsmen incursion started. And Miyetti Allah, the spokesperson for him, said: ‘Once we rule this place, and we can take back our land whenever we want,’” he recalled. “I said that this person should be arrested and locked up. Whoever says that he wants to repeat his history of conquest is admitting knowledge before or after or support (for the invasion), anyway. Is there nothing like hate speech anymore? Why are you banning IPOB without banning Miyetti Allah? he said. owo attack Soyinka condemned the attack on St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo state, where dozens of worshipers, including children, were killed by gunmen suspected of being pastors. He said that herders who invade communities are motivated by what he called “subjugation mentality madness.” He, however, said he would resist the group’s attempt to chase him “out of my own portion of the land.” “The idea that you can unleash terror on me because you want my little piece of territory or you want my soul, I mean, you want to subjugate me, you want to make me a slave. Well, I would figure that out first,” she said. Putin–Herders analogy Soyinka said the herders share similarities with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February, killing dozens of people and destroying property. “Would you have anticipated Putin invading Ukraine? Bomb civilians with such fiendish glee? And what is the crime of Ukraine? “And I wonder what the difference is between Putin and the herdsmen who round up farmers’ land and invade. They kill, massacre, burn, completely disperse families and leave them homeless overnight. They (the pastors) and Putin should meet. It’s the same mentality,” Soyinka said.
