Why I didn’t fire Emefiele for alleged political ambition – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has given reasons not to fire the Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefielefor their partisan activities. In an interview with Bloomberg, Buhari said that the CBN Governing Board has the power to determine whether or not the governor was wrong. Emefiele came under fire in May after a group obtained the N100 million presidential nomination and expression of interest form from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). CBN’s governor later rejected the presidential forms, noting that if he heeded the call to run for president, he would use his “hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to purchase my own nomination forms.” . Despite protests against his partisanship, Emefiele also sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Federal Attorney General and Minister of Justice over his eligibility. He asked the court to prevent the INEC from disqualifying him from participating in the primary elections of his preferred political party. In the midst of all this, Mr. Buhari refused to call the head of CBN to order or relieve him of his post. PREMIUM TIMES, in an editorial, called on Emefiele to step down and pursue his political ambitions, if he has any, or publicly distance himself from groups clamoring for his involvement. Interview In the interview, Buhari said that Emefiele faced accusations of “partisanship” due to his “unorthodox” approach to economics. “The governor of CBN is appointed by the president. But this appointment is subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. Ultimately, it will be up to the CBN Board of Directors to determine if a CBN Governor’s actions have violated applicable laws to ensure that he or she can carry out his or her duties in the most effective manner. “But there is a subtext to the accusations. Since the governor follows a model outside economic orthodoxy, he is branded as a politician. But orthodoxy has been proven wrong time and time again. “Instead, the governor is pursuing an alternative economic model that puts people at the center of politics. Nigeria should be free to choose its development model and how to build our economy, so that it works for Nigerians.” Emefiele supported the policy of closing land borders to protect local rice farmers in the country. The bank has also invested billions in the agricultural sector through the Anchor Borrower Program.
