Woman allegedly whips minor with electric cable

An Ogudu Magistrates Court in lakes stateon Monday, ordered the preventive detention of a 27-year-old woman, Eunice Agboye, for alleged indecent treatment of her 11-year-old nephew. Ms Agboye allegedly whipped the minor with an electric cable for losing a N1,000 that she gave her to buy something. The defendant had pleaded not guilty to one count of indecent treatment of a child. The Magistrate, OA Daodu, ordered that she be detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Center. Ms. Daodu ordered the police to send the case file to the state director of public prosecution for advice. He adjourned the case until July 14 for mention. The police had prosecuted Ms. Agboye, who resides at the Ganiyu Estate in Igbolomu Bustop, Agric, Ikorodu, Lagos State. The prosecutor, Sunday Bassey, told the court that Ms Agboye committed the crime on June 24 in Oshinteye Street, Ketu, Lagos. He said the defendant illegally and indecently treated the 11-year-old boy by whipping his buttocks with an electrical cord. “The victim, who has been living with the accused for more than three years, was sent to buy something and was given N1000. “He came back to report that the money was missing and that he was severely beaten by the defendant. “The victim suffered serious injuries to the buttocks and other parts of the body,” he said. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that indecent treatment of a child attracts a prison sentence of seven years, under Section 135 (1)(2) of the Act.
